Hello Jonathan,
The result of alsaconf is that it has successfully set up the driver
for my sound card (SoundBlaster Live 5.1), and it wishes me to have a
nice day.  However, the sound card does not work.

The result of lsmod for the card is, 
snd_emu10k1           102656  1 snd_emu10k1_synth

I'm also having problems with syncing my Palm Pilot using jpilot
(pilot-link), and this seems similar, in that the device does not seem
to be found.

Or, maybe it's not related.  I don't know.  I'm stumped.
