Greetings; Before I do the Windows thing of a complete reinstall of the system ...
No need. You've got the basics already. However, if you're running stable (Sarge), you might consider upgrading to testing (Etch), or even unstable (Sid). If you're on a server that needs 24x7 uptime, stick with Sarge (but then, why X?). If you're putting together a workstation, I think you'll do better with Etch.
Look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log (probably) for lines marked with an (EE). Report those lines here. There is something wrong and the xserver won't come up. All it says is "I cannot start the X server" and some other general stuff. I have tried running dpkg-reconfigure xfree86 several times but somthing is not getting completely reset because I still have the same problem.
Also, if your machine has an integrated video system, check the BIOS to make sure you've allocated sufficient video RAM (e.g. 8MB or better).
Also, if you've ever edited /etc/X11/XFree86.conf (or whatever the file was named in Sarge) by hand, the dpkg-reconfigure thing won't work unless you follow the instructions at the top of that file.
