It's actually entirely safe to kill the dpkg-preconfigure process, but of course it should not be hanging. To try to track down why it's hanging I'd probably need some serious logs. Like the logs you get from booting the installer with "install DEBCONF_DEBUG=5" , which will end up in /var/log/installer in the installed system. -- see shy jo
