As I see it, confusion has risen from different interpretations of
Murdock's words.

Is Ubuntu Debian?  A true debianist will feel insulted, and say that the
first is just a lesser derivative of the latter.

But this is not what Murdock was talking about. Instead, he was trying
to say that Ubuntu's origins, its basics, are those of Debian, that it
belongs to the same 'family'.  And as far as I can see, there is
absolutely nothing wrong with that statement.
