Marcus, Using apt pinning is not for the faint of heart. Also, as you pointed out in another message, can become problematic when the package is updated and depends on newer libraries. Let me encourage you to go the from-source route. I have written a HOWTO on customizing Debian packages: http://people.connexer.com/~roberto/howtos/debcustomize The content is equally applicable to backporting (which is what you want to do).
