Not usually, but I suppose what type of card it is. I have a modem
PCMCIA card which I just "release" whenever I feel like it. But if its
some sort of storage device (if there is such a thing) then you *may*
lose data.

Also, how do you "actually unmount" one?

Don't forget to check that your /etc/apt/sources.lst entries point to 
etch and not testing, otherwise you may end up with a broken system once
etch goes stable.
