usb invisible beyond hubs

Hi there,

Followed the instructions and purged hotplug, but now nothing I plug into
my usb ports gets detected, and no entries in either kernel or daemon
message logs show any hint that anything happened at all. The devices
(mouse and disk) power up, so I doubt that the ports are simply dead.
When I plug my CF card into the reader, that gets recognized and I can
mount the disk as usual. So udev is not completely unaware of the world
around it. Have not done any configuration myself; all standard debian
testing stuff as installed by the package. Updated my system again just
today in hopes something would change, but no go. Here are some stats
about my system: Fujitsu P-Series Lifebook (used to know what number...)

uname -a: Linux xxxxx 2.6.18-3-686 #1 SMP Mon Dec 4 16:41:14 UTC 2006

Dunnow why there should be three hubs; the laptop has two connectors...
Anyway: I take the above dump to mean that usb in general is acknowledged
to exist on my machine. Udev documentation on the web most helpfully
points out that unless I want special device names I better not screw with
the standard configurations... Oh, and lspci yields usb-wise:

00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03)
00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 03)
00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-M) USB2
EHCI Controller (rev 03)

lsusb yields:

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Any other diagnostics I should use? (And of course, mouse and disk are
plugged in...)

Thanks for any help, and please put my e-mail into your reply cc; the
enourmous traffic on debian-user forced me off the list a long time ago.

Thanks in advance, Kai
