I created another kernel, adding the following to my previous custom kernel:
General Setup:
	POSIX_MQUEUE
	SYSFS_DPRECATED
Kernel Hacking:
	UNUSED_SYMBOLS

Things still aren't right, but it's better. I can mount both data and audio
cds, but it's still awkward. The first time I put a disk in, nothing happens.
No links get created in /dev. However, with root I can
mount /dev/.static/dev/hda -t iso9660 /mnt/cdrom
Then everything's fine until I reboot. Autodetect works when I change cds.

So now the question is: Why don't the links get created when I put in a disk
for the first time? For some reason, I have to manually mount it (or run
cdplay) as root. I know why it has to be root -- because /dev/.static is
accessible only to root.

I have a feeling the rest of this fix is a one-liner. It's either in the
kernel configuration or some command I need to run. Is there a clever guru
out there with the magic answer?
