What type of file are you trying to edit? What error message do you get?
Is this with a clean .vimrc file?

Don't forget to check that your /etc/apt/sources.lst entries point to
etch and not testing, otherwise you may end up with a broken system once
etch goes stable.

I think the version you installed is vim-tiny, it don't include
[syntax] function.
