play back mpeg frame by frame

Folks,
I wish to be able to move from frame to frame in an MPEG (or similar if
that's easier). However, for my file
        /home/michael/madrid_SO4_layer5.mpeg: MPEG sequence, v1,
        progressive Y'CbCr 4:2:0 video, 25 fps
neither 'totem' nor 'wxvlc' seem to support it for such files. 

Any suggestions?
