Make sure you have xorg (or x-window-system for sarge) installed, I think that 
would be a dependency of gnome or kde but I'm not sure. At the very end of 
the boot sequence you should see kdm or gdm starting and that should fire up 
your desktop manager and then you can log in. If that isn't starting 
succesfully x may not be configured right. Try running "dpkg-reconfigure 
xsever-xorg" (or "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" for sarge) and choose the 
vesa driver, that will (almost) always work. You can tweak it further once 
your up and running if needed.
