DNS problems: NXDOMAIN on an internal net

Hi, all

I'm trying to set up a DNS server on my home network. I want to use DNS
because (a) I want to create aliases and (b) the DNS server in the modem
my ISP provides doesn't work half the time.

I've studied the O'Reilly book "DNS and Bind", double- and
triple-checked my named.conf and zone files, scoured the web but I can't
find any solution to my problem.

The problem is, when I issue 'nslookup' on a machine that's listed in my
zone file, I get one of two errors:

jim@sirius:~
$ nslookup filch
Server:         127.0.0.1
Address:        127.0.0.1#53

** server can't find filch: NXDOMAIN

jim@sirius:~
$ nslookup filch.dreampossible.ca
Server:         127.0.0.1
Address:        127.0.0.1#53

** server can't find filch.dreampossible.ca: SERVFAIL

jim@sirius:~
$

'filch' is listed in the zone file for dreampossible.ca. syslog does not
indicate any errors, either on reloading the named server or when
nslookup is performed.

Would it be appropriate to post my zone and conf files here, or should I
tar them up and put them in an ftp site?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
