Did you dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, maybe the monitor is not
detected correctly. I see in your other post that it works for fast
games on Windows, that would bother me in the sense that the monitor is
capable of it yet xfree86 is not capable of it.

Maybe you could try a recent live-cd, one with xorg, and see if that
helps.
