Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

Hi all,
I am new to linux and newer to debian. I did a very stupid thing today. I
needed to run the crystallography software ccp4, when i tried doing it, it
said the 'libc.so.6' does not exist. So i transferred the file from a
fedora core 3 machine to the debian machine. ccp4 did run for a while. But
then the machine hanged suddenly. When everything else failed, i force
rebooted it...and it stopped with the message:

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

chroot: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.s0.6: file too short
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I have some data on the hard disks which is not backed up so is there an
easy way out other than reinstalling debian?

this is what i have done so far:
I got the source dvd, put it in the slot, rebooted...in the main installer
menu, used the 'execute a shell' option

Now i was planning to copy /lib/libc.so.6 on DVD to the /lib directory in
root filesystem. So i did:

.......................................................................
mkdir /new
mount /dev/hda1 /new
Mounting /dev/hda1 on /new failed: no such file or directory
.......................................................................

Then i tried:

.......................................................................
chroot /new
chroot: cannot execute /bin/sh: no such file or directory
.......................................................................

But 'ls' or 'ls /' does list the /new directory.

So what is the way out?

Thanks and Regards,
Arvind
