Then get the source of newer version and compile it yourself under
stable environment.

This will avoid all library issues.  You may need to patch this source 
or upgrade other programs...  

You can get good binary and example source from http://www.backports.org/

This is not trivial thing.

Pinning works nicely on simple bash shell and doc packages but I am not
so much fan when it coms to binary C programs.
