I think you forgot to update the list of available packages.
If you use aptitude interactively (just aptitude with no parameters),
hit 'u' to update aptitude on what packages are avilable. You will then
get a tab of 'upgradable packages'. hit enter on this list to see what
all are wanting upgrading. If you hit '+' on this list tab it will
select all the upgradeable packages. Hit 'g' to see what all aptitude
wants to do, edit the list if you must, then hit 'g' again to tell it to
do so.
You can do all this from the command line but I always use the UI to
aptitude.
