Hi Kai,

I've seen the two other replies you've received and thought I'd give you
my two cents worth.

I have found that Etch really is a cut above. The Etch kernels uses
udev (in fact __must__ use udev). I have also found that it is easier
to make an Etch daily installer media (in my case USB stick but you
could just make a netinst.iso CDROM) and just try it then if there's a
problem start searching. It usually just works. Its also faster (even
fetching the iso over dial up) to just try an install than to search
first.

At least for text mode. I only use X for a few specific apps and can go
without it for a while if need be. But at least with Etch installed you
can use linux tools to figure out how to get X working.

Read the installation manual first. After you try, submit an
installation report (success or failure).

Good luck.

Doug.
