I agree, use the metapackages.  They should get you out of trouble in
aptitude (or even just apt-get).  In aptitude do a search for ^kde$ to get
straight to the metapackage, and similarly for gnome. (In case you don't
know, ^ is for start of line and $ is end of line, so you don't have to
'n' your way through hundreds of packages containing the letters 'kde')
