Problem with nagios2-common OR dpkg

There seems to be a problem with the nagios2-common configure script.

root@tux:~# aptitude install nagios2-common
[...]
Setting up nagios2-common (2.5-3) ...
Adding system-user for nagios
Usage: useradd [options] LOGIN
[useradd help dump]
mkdir: cannot create directory `/home/stu/--system/public_html': No such
file or directory
chown: unrecognised option `--system:student'
Try `chown --help' for more information.
passwd: unrecognised option `--system'
[passwd help dump]
dpkg: error processing nagios2-common (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 6

Something in the configure script is mangling the commands passed to
mkdir, chown, and passwd.

I simply added the 'nagios' user by hand and things worked again.
