Well here's how it went:

Etch netinst:  same problem - he can't find my network card.

So, I tried plan B:

Sarge netinst: worked just fine.

dist-upgrade:  OK. It did not mess my network connectivity either.

So am I happy now with my bran new etch..?

Well not quite ..

I did notice that I'm still running the sarge 2.4.27 kernel instead of
the 2.6.17 that's in the etch repository..

Is this "normal" .. or did my dist-upgrade run into a problem and decide
not to upgrade to a more recent kernel?

If so .. there should be a log of the events somewhere and I could take
a look at it .. Try to figure out what happened.
