For me on sarge 2.6.8-3-686, this works for my camera:
$ pmount /dev/sda1

which results in:
$ mount
[...]
/dev/sda1 on /media/sda1 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077)

If user is in group plugdev, no need for root.

gthumb will ask to download photos from the camera, but I often do it
with mv from an xterm.  I'm not running gnome and don't have gphoto2,
though gthumb pulls in the gphoto2 libs.
