xine colormap problem

I've just installed debian sarge on a new computer, and it mostly went OK. However, I'm having a strange problem playing video files, which I generally do on xine. This problem occurs with other flavors, though, e.g., kmplayer, gxine, oxine, etc.

The *first* time I run xine in a given X session, it works fine. Each subsequent time, though, I get the effect I associate with an inadequate color map - that is, distorted color to the point of looking like a "cartoon." The only way I've discovered to fix this is to kill and restart X, which is obviously not an adequate workaround.

The system is a Lenovo ThinkCentre 8212-UN7, the monitor a ThinkVision L192P. Below I've pasted the relevant piece of the output of lspci -vv and of xvinfo. Any ideas will be most appreciated!

Thanks,
Andy Perrin
