Hi!

hmm .. so can anybody having an external CD or DVD writerand running
Debian Etch (or Sid) confirm if a data disc is automounted when inserted
in the external drive?

I have
$> dpkg -l hal* | grep ^ii
ii hal 0.5.7.1-1 Hardware Abstraction Layer

It works with the new version in Sid. The changelog mentions this issue.

dpkg -l hal* | grep ^ii
ii  hal

  * debian/patches/22_recognize_partitions.patch
    - Added. More robust recognition that a block device is a partition. Fixes
    detecting scsi cdrom drives as partitions (From upstream git)

Yup, I just upgraded the Sid machine (hadn't been upgraded for over a week now) and connected the external USB DVD writer (Samsung SE-S164L) and then inserted a data DVD. KDE gave the prompt window about what to do with it and also an icon for the disc. Worked like a charm. The new hal in Sid is:
$> dpkg -l hal | grep ^ii
ii hal 0.5.7.1-2 Hardware Abstraction Layer

So the older hal (0.5.7.1-1) in my Etch box is the problem. Well, it will be upgraded in a few days time and all should be well in this box too.
