etc/group * or ! for password

In etc/group I have the lines:

man:*:12:
sasl:*:45:
plugdev:!:46:hal,john

Can anyone explain the * and the ! ? All the other entries have x. I cannotfind any explanation for anything other than a password or x in this field.
