Thank you for taking the time to reply, Hubert!

Sure a pipline like the one you give would work... if flpsed would
actually do what I want... it's a step in the right direction, but

  - it cannot highlight
  - it cannot store multiline annotations
  - it *beeps* when i try to quit without saving
  - it won't let me just save, I always have to save as

While flpsed is definitely better than no flpsed, it's not really
what I was looking for.
