apt-get/aptitude update failing

I went to update my etch system and got lines like this from "aptitude
update":

    W: Couldn't stat source package list http://mirrors.kernel.org etch/contrib Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/mirrors.kernel.org_debian_dists_etch_contrib_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

But, that file exists!

    [wohler@olgas:768]$ l /var/lib/apt/lists/mirrors.kernel.org_debian_dists_etch_contrib_binary-i386_Packages
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 186608 2006-08-09 12:22 /var/lib/apt/lists/mirrors.kernel.org_debian_dists_etch_contrib_binary-i386_Packages

Any idea what is going on?

I already tried updating sources.list to point to http.us.debian.org (in
case the mirror was suspect), but had the same issues.
