That's probably a single-channel AC97 device.  If you have a free PCI slot, 
the SB Pro 128 works great with ALSA, plays multiple sound streams under OSS, 
and is $15 new at most retail outlets (cheaper if you go with a wholesaler).

Or see if the kernel used by testing and unstable is available in stable and 
use that kernel...
