probably.

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

you can set the resolutions your monitor supports.

also M-C-f1, f2, etc will not shutdown the xserver, it will just
toggle you over to a virtual terminal. after you reconfigure, you'll
have to restart with 

invoke-rc.d [g|k|x|w]dm restart
