Selective downloads? None that I know of. There are CLI apps,
though, in the archive for that.
If you store your data in IMAP, then you could pick/choose which
client you like.
cron+fetchmail+postfix+spamassassin+maildrop+courier-imap makes a
great email system, and gives you ultimate flexibility. For
example, during the Sid X.org 7.0 transition, my GUI got borked for
a couple of days.
Not a *huge* issue for me, though, since fetchmail kept on getting
my email for me, and mutt understands IMAP.
