1) Re-install depmod. Perhaps your depmod binary got corrupted or deleted.
Nope. /sbin/depmod is where it should be and working fine.
2) Make sure you're booting with the kernel you think you're booting
with. Perhaps you're booting with 2.6.16.1 rather than 2.6.16.
2.6.16 is the kernel and /lib/modules/2.6.16/modules.dep is definitely
there, yet the stream of error messages at boot time persists:
"FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.16/modules.dep. No such file or directory"
