I would try changing my DefaultDepth.

If that didn't help, I'd try using the "vesa" Device driver.

If that didn't help, I'd suspect a damaged video cable going to the
monitor; boot into another OS (Knoppix LiveCD, etc) and see if the
problem goes away.
