lm_sensors procfs/sysfs problem

hi guys,

there has recently been a discussion on amd64 list about the lm_sensors. 
when trying it on my i386 box i seem to have the same problem, however 
solution was not given on amd64. maybe someone can provide me with some 
hints?

$ sensors
Can't access procfs/sysfs file
Unable to find i2c bus information;
For 2.6 kernels, make sure you have mounted sysfs and libsensors
was compiled with sysfs support!
For older kernels, make sure you have done 'modprobe i2c-proc'!

running sensors-detect detects all the sensors, suggests adding things 
to /etc/modules and finishes ok - this should resolve the abovementioned 
problem. however, i get this message anyway. /proc and /sys are mounted.

sensord also complains:
Error reading /proc or /sys: modules probably not loaded

i have i2c_i801 and i2c_core modules loaded. i2c_dev isn't there - 
shouldn't it be loaded automatically?
