kernel problems

Hi list

I am having problems booting into my 2.6.16-2-486 kernel, it stops at
some error messages the look like the following (this is pasted from
another web page where someone had a similar problem and didnt get any
answeres, it is edited to fit my case).

modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.6.16-2-486/modules.dep
(No such file or directory)
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.6.16-2-486/modules.dep
(No such file or directory)
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 432: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

I can boot fine into my backup kernel 2.6.12 which would imply that
everything is ok outside the kernel but I allso tried to install the
686 version of the same kernel and got the same error messages (except
686 instead of 486 were in the pathname).

I installed the kernel with apt-get install linux-image-2.6.16-2-486
and have updated all the packages the kernel depends on.

Please tell me how I can get this kernel to work.

Thanks in advance.

Oli
