Modern hard drives have a built-in self-diagnosis system called SMART.

Well I got an RMA from the vendor for my hdb1 (250GB HD) after their diagnostic product gave me a code on a full test. But then I read this article

http://linux.omnipotent.net/article.php?article_id=12488

and following its advice and holding down <cr> lots and lots during the repair prompts, was able to mount and use the data. Then reran the diagnostic -- powermax -- and the full test came out clean. So I've re-added my hdb1 partition to /etc/fstab and rebooted and all seems well.

The following's what I get for current status so I'm wondering if this turned out to be a software issue after all and I ought to cancel my RMA, or if the HD's likely to act up again.
