It took a bit to understand the need to add 
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main (and its deb-src corollary) to /etc/apt/sources.list in order to access non-local packages. 

Discovering the power of apt-get and aptitude.
 
I decided to go with the binary for the moment and will compile as a learning exercise.
