No, gphoto2 «talks» with the camera in order to photos download, delete, etc.
I use it with one Ixus 55 too --with the digiKam GUI. And with one Lumix
FZ30, but with this camera the actual gphoto2 crhases --bug reported. The
Lumix can work as PTP or USB mass storage, and mount this camera and move
folders.
