I don't know about "better", but I do something different.
Each user has a "sites" directory in the home area. This is typically
structured:
~/sites/www.sitename.com/html/
For some users who ask, I also make a "logs" directory. Users then
don't need to leave their own area to upload new content, and you don't
have to mess around with unusual mount points.
