It really, REALLY sucks to install a package and afterwards not being
able to find(!)/start the exe because some retard named them like:

"GSnes9x"
"gtkBitchX-1.1-final" (what were you thinking????)
"gtkBitchX"
...and the list goes on (for sure)

what about "crossfire"???

I know I've installed it. But there is no way I can start it because
some frickin' "specialst" (I wrote "asshole" before) must have called it
"Xfire".. wait... no, that's not it... or "EKSfire"... no.... or..
"X-fire"... no... as a matter of fact it isn't likely to start with an
"X"... neither "Cross".. nor "cross".. maybe "cf"... nope...

I just have found the sound files using find so I can at least imagine
what the game would sound like if I was able to find the exe in order to
start it...

I can handle acronyms (when they make sence). But I can't handle names
that look pretty on some stupid Desktop but are a pain in the ass for
everyone else...

These programs are meant to be started from package-installed menu
items.

This is what I'd use to track down package names:
   locate <whatever> | grep bin
   dpkg -S <filename>
   apt-get search <blurb>

I find the files,

/var/lib/dpkg/info/*list

very useful from time to time.
