Sendmail used to be *the* MTA, so many programs coded back in the day hardcoded the assumption that they could use /usr/sbin/sendmail to inject mail for delivery. MTAs nowadays provide their own /usr/sbin/sendmail replacement for compatibility with programs that still use that interface.
