did you get the "Linux................." line before the errors?

I'm guessing this is an important clue. Next place I'd look is at what modules are being loaded. Compare lsmod from KNoppix, Gentoo live with nosata option and maybe also look at what the debian installer is using as well (you can alt-f2 to a VT from the installer). There must be some module option that Gentoo is using that makes it work?  Well, its a shot in the dark. Otherwise I'd say your disk is dying. :(
