it is the same kernel 2.4.27
the only difference (686 and smp) is the choices made in the
make menuconfig stage.

you can actually get the kernel by 
apt-get install kernel-source-2.4.27 
do apt-cache search kernel-source-2.4.27
to find it, i think.

Unless you read some more you will get into trouble :(

Read a few of the !Many howtos on the linux kernel in general.

also consider switching to 2.6 version kernels. They are nice and stable too.
