just a thought... maybe the "Computer" icon is automatically created, much like the "CD" icon for a freshly inserted CD. The WM has to place them somewhere and arbitrarily chooses a location based on the default grid? Just a hunch as I dumped gnome for IceWM a while back and don't really remember.
