ugh, the attachment I sent dosent have that resoulution but I did run
that when using XF86, the laptop now uses xorg and if your stuck I can
boot it up and send the current xorg.con whose mode line should work
with XF86

from the file I attached earlier, you could just add your resolution to
the mode line changing this:
Modes "1280x1024" "800x600" "640x480"
to this:
Modes "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "800x600" "640x480"

Thanks Angelina.

I've been busy trying stuff since my last post with some success, even if I don't understand why...

I just reinstalled sarge from scratch. This time I didn't configure a framebuffer text console (vga= 317). I installed x-windows-core and configured to use the "nv" graphics driver, "/dev/gpmdata" mouse device and "IntelliMouse" protocal. All was well except for the lack of a 1400x1050 screen resolution, so things were pretty much as before.

Next I installed the latest linux driver from the nVidia web site. The installer for this also configures your XF86Config-4 file and backs up the old one.
And bingo - I now have a full-screen apparently working setup.

But now I'm even more confused. Ideally I'd like to understand why it suddenly works. Everything I've found on the net describes the great difficulty in configuring this laptop to run correctly at 1400x1050. Some X config files I've found (which didn't work) contain 1400x1050 modelines like yours above. However, I can't see any reference to that resolution in the now running config built by the nVidia installer which seems to work fine. I've quoted the original flawed XF86Config file and also the modified version that the nVidia installer produced. Can anyone here tell me why it works?
