Kernel crash when using usb thumb drive

I installed Sarge on a HS20 blade of IBM BladeCenter. The installation process was not ease. Kernel 2.4 cannot detect the usb cdrom correctly, so I boot and install with kernel 2.6. When I rebooted after installation, grub couldn't find the root fs. Finally I figured that is because the kernel uses sda for scsi disk in fstab. But I did select sdb for installation. I thought this might be caused by the usb cdrom. So I changed the /etc/fstab and substitute all sda with sdb. Then the system came up at last. Now another problem hit me which I cannot figured out why. You know, our BladeCenter has 14 blades which is just a PC respectively, all share the same one console and one usb cdrom. When I press the button on one blade for cdrom, the cdrom is promptly detected by the Linux host and ready for use. But when I umount the cdrom and switch the cdrom away to another blade, the former linux blade will report the following messages on the console and die after a few second. I think this is due to the bug in some usb modules but not so sure. Any help is appreciated!
