Or if you're desperate to install with an smp kernel, at the boot prompt type: # expert26 which will give you the smp option during the install. The end result is the same. FWIW, I usually do a standard install and upgrade the kernel afterwards.
Had any problems with 2.6.8-2-smp kernel not recognizing an IDE drive? I have a Creative Labs CD-RW and it exists under 2.4.17 <sic>, not under the 2.6.8 SMP kernel.
