Lost X server after dist-upgrade

I have been fighting with this for over a week and am looking for some help.

Short version; I am running debian unstable, installed as 3.0/woody. I have done some dist-upgrades in the past, the last being about 9 months ago. I was using kdm to login to fluxbox, KDE or another window manager and kernel 2.6.8. To make a long story short I did the apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade cycle, and aptitude dist-upgrade. Now on reboot I am dropped into the console. I have been trying to solve the problem by investigating xauth, xhost, Xauthority, with no success.

Status of packages: dpkg --audit gives no problem files. apt-cache policy says; xdm 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4, kdm 4:3.5.1-1, KDE 5:45, xserver-xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4, xserver-xfree86 not installed, gcc 4:4.02-2, udev 0.084-5, libc6 2.3.6-1.

Here  is my sources.list:
#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r1 _Woody_ - Official i386 Binary-1 (20021218)]/ unstable

If my regular user (myself) runs startx the screen goes to the gray screen with the black X for a second and then get the following error;
xauth: creating new authority file /home/jerry/.serverauth.2042

/usr/X11R6/bin/xauth: error in locking authority file /home/test/.Xauthority

I created a new user (test) and he can startx. KDE starts up fine. In the konsole that test opens I can su to root or myself and run konqueror etc.

Root from the console (ctrl-alt-F1) can run xdm. Root and test can login to KDE but I can't.

I suspect the problem is that root and myself don't have valid .Xauthority files but I can't figure out how to repair it.

I would appreciate any advice on how to get back to using KDM for login and getting X server access for myself and root (to run synaptic and konqueror).

I can post any other info as needed.

Jerry
