I got the same error some days ago when upgrading xorg. Xorg works 
normal again (apart from
a hardly noticeable fraying of bold letters) after I have changed the line
       Driver    "nvidia"
to      Driver    "nv"
in section "Device" of my file  /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
