Re: Acer Aspire 3003: don't show shell after X11 exit

Hello,

I have an Acer Aspire 3003 notebook with kernel 2.6.12-1-k7 on Sarge.
When I boot the Debian, the shell works fine. However, when I logoff X11
the Debian don't show the shell. The display remains black. If I press
Crtl Alt Del, the machine reboot and I return to shell.

I assume that you have set up your system such that it boots to a
console (shell), then you log in and start XFree86 manually with
"startx" or "xinit". Is that correct?

While X is running you should be able to switch to one of the six
consoles by pressing CTRL + ALT + Fx, where Fx denotes one of the
function keys F1 - F6. CTRL + ALT + F7 should bring you back to your X
display. CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE should kill/restart X. Does this work?

Try to log out from X again and when you hang at the black screen press
CTRL + ALT + F1. This should return you to the console from which you
started X. Do you see any error messages? Is the console busy or do you
have a prompt ($ sign + blinking cursor)?

If necessary, go to the CTRL + ALT + F2 console, log in and check the
contents of the file .xsession-errors in your user's home directory.
What are the last messages in that file? Furthermore, run the command

egrep "^\((EE|WW)\)" /var/log/XFree86.0.log

to see all the error messages and warnings from the X-server. This
should give us an idea what went wrong.
