..Xfree86-4.1.X?  Failed here too (5x IBM TP 760ED's)
Try any X.org or dist-upgrade to Sid, both works _nicely_ here, 
Sarge should work too, I have a 760ED on RH9 which uses
Xfree86-4.3.X just like Sarge.
