I was using that too.  I got rid of it, installed the Debian packages
(from testing, not unstable, as I have a 'testing' system and have the
marillat site in my sources already for mplayer) and odd behavior
persists.  To test, I went to irs.gov, where there are lots of pdf
files.  I was able to view them without trouble.  But the files at

http://www.plr.uk.com/forms&leaflets/assigningrights/assigningindex.htm

not only don't display but break my browser's ability to display pdf
files.  So maybe the problem is there not here.  But those files look
fine when downloaded and viewed in acroread.  So I'm puzzled.

Thanks to all for the help.  If I figure out what the problem is I'll
let you know.
